Dear Nick
That does ring some bells. I am reading a fascinating book called
"Honoring the Self" by Nathaniel Branden which describes how we all learn
to cut ourselves off from our own needs and feelings from a very early
age. This denial distorts our view of reality and can have drastic
effects on the choices we make and our attitudes and beliefs.
These habits can be unlearned, or new habits can be fostered. But it
occurs to me that if most people are burdened by beliefs about themselves
that they barely understand, then surely this must impact the way they can
learn, or even how much they want to learn. Ie if you are actively
cultivating a version of reality that supports your view of yourself, then
accommodating any changes to that reality may be extremely difficult.
Regards
Christine
