The Tortoise and the Hare came up in a recent phone conversation. The
client was saying that social change occurs very slowly, that the hares
burn out but after a decade sometimes the tortoise actually gets some
results.

My response was that the tortoise and the hare comprise a system, and it's
the tension between the two that energizes the system. If either one is
absent, there is no race. If either one collapses, the story's over, and
nothing happens. Tortoises need the motivation provided by the hare and
vice versa.

This was an aha! for my client. I suspect that even a 7 year old can
grasp the concept of "systems thinking" with this little fable.
