Dear Winfried,
"(PS) Dabigny's garden, foreground of grass in green and pink, To the
left a green and lilac bush and the stem of a plant with whitish leaves.
In the middle a border of roses, to the right a wicket, a wall, and above
the wall a hazel tree with violet foliage. Then a lilac hedge, a row of
rounded yellow lime trees, the house itself in the background, pink, with
a roof of bluish tiles. A bench and three chairs, a figure in black with a
yellow hat and in the foreground a black cat. Sky pale green." (651 23/24
July 1890, F) Vincent.
Those are supposedly the last words written by Vincent before he left the
hotel and went to sing his last song to the crows.
He bagan the letter (to his brother Theo) " Thanks for your kind letter
and for the 50 f note it contained. There are many things I should like to
write to you about, but I feel it is useless." big snip;-) to above.... ^
I want to thank you courteously and from the depths of my self limiting
imagination for the many, many letters you have written in this place over
the years. Slowly and perhaps just for me this morning (though i think for
many more a shared experience) but for me then, speaking purely as a
re-forming artist;-) this letter of yours referenced above for the easy
viewing and retrieval of it by our fellow cyber artists and artistes is a
work of art. And I compliment you on it. What is the colour I see. Light,
pure unadulterated light of an opening understanding. I may of course be
deluded in some owned inner 'dark corner' -- and if so then how much more
I needed that little light. Hence have I pulled a light from the obscurity
of another letter writer's long and thoughted LO list (those among the
pre-impressionists, the impressionists and post-impressionists).
Maybe we'll get to paint together one day in some garden. I look forward
to that day. Thanks Winfried.
( The Moslem Prophet said that the reward of a life well spent was to live
for ever in the Paradise of a walled and scented many coloured garden with
pure water and light in correct harmonic abundance ~~~~~~i think somehow
without reference to books or formal learning Vincent knew that
systemically?)
Best,
Andrew Campbell
