Doc,

Thanks for the Jabberwock!

It has been a few years since I first joined the list, in the days of
yore, when posted messages still had only three digits after the "LO." I
left for some time, and now peek back. My oh my, how the discourse has
developed. Your vorpal sword slices so refreshingly.

When I first joined this list nearly at its inception, I was looking for
practical applications of learning. I guess there are other lists whose
principal focus is that. Here, there is much parsing of thinking, shifting
of lenses, falling away and replacement of veils of language. I am struck
by a kind of search for "objective reality" where blue is Blue, without
connotation, Truth is ineluctable, and stuff like that!

Today I try to be practical. So I provide organizations with tools to
solve problems, generate a firm and meaningful voice out of cacophony,
align for action, and all those warm things which consultants purport to
do. Seeing results is believing, for me.

But, back to language. May I share some verse of my own? Terseness,
intuition, metaphor, connections sufficient in the moment. Take your pick:

Small Feather Killed

Drunk or simply not
Discriminating between lines
Of broken white
Or faded yellow,
Small Feather killed
Himself, beyond
The empty drive-in, far
Side of town. They say
His Chevy flew off
Near rotten
Tarmac behind Loretta's
Field of maize: twilight
Spiriting away.

In the best spirit,
Barry Mallis
