>From my experience you have captured perfectly the value -- and the
learning opportunity -- of so-called strategic management. A strategy is
only a recipe until you learn what is wrong with that recipe, and then you
change it. We could say, "Observe, hypothesize, test, learn." as the
learning equivalent of the strategic management process.
When I climb a mountain I have a strategic management process. Everyone
collects information, and we compare. As part of the process, a few
potential routes will emerge, and we will develop tests to further refine.
The process continues as we approach the mountain, and can observe some
approaches for the first time through our own eyes. Even as we start the
climb, new information will emerge that changes our minds about how to
continue, or even to back up and start over.
No different in any organization.
