Background
In response to growing interdependence among the world's knowledge
economies the planned formation of a Global Knowledge Economics Council
(GKEC) was announced on January 23, 2001. The GKEC is the first major
international forum dedicated to global knowledge economics and its study
of such considerations as knowledge as a commodity and how it is produced
and consumed internally and/or exported, knowledge unit accounting, and
adding knowledge productivity factors to GDP reporting. Among other
governmental, industrial, and academic uses, the results of GKEC research
and discussions will help in drafting policies affecting the operation of
world's knowledge economies.
As the primary vehicle for fostering international knowledge economics
cooperation, GKEC's goal is to provide a knowledge economics forum for the
advancement of the knowledge science, knowledge technology, knowledge
production, and knowledge markets sectors of the emerging global knowledge
industry.
The GKEC is dedicated to providing its global Members and constituents
with a greater understanding and awareness of the dynamics of improving
rates of innovation and innovation diffusion in the knowledge economy.
GKEC worldwide membership will include governments, international
organizations, economists who are keyed into knowledge economics, and
knowledge management practitioners and representatives from the private
sector. Representatives from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, United
Kingdom, and United States have already joined the council with inquires
from other countries inquiries arriving daily.
Inaugural GKEC Meetings
The Global Knowledge Economics Council intends to be of significant
assistance to its members and participants in its first year of
operations. Its first research program on Knowledge Unit Production was
started in early February 2001. The inaugural GKEC meetings in August 2001
promise to be a mind-shifting experience for theorists and practitioners
of knowledge economics, as attention is focused on knowledge commodity
production other key global knowledge economics concerns.
The GKEC meetings will lead international efforts to promote the
development and greater awareness and understanding of leading knowledge
industry policies and practices. Members and other meeting participants
will address critical knowledge economy concerns such as:
. knowledge production and diffusion measurement
. knowledge productivity reporting programs
. promotional, service, and management programs for knowledge markets
. knowledge technologies and tools
. knowledge science and research programs
Benefits to GKEC members will be far-reaching through its
. knowledge economics goals of promoting coordinated policies and
strategies for global, governmental, and private knowledge commodity
markets
. political goals of fostering global knowledge management technical
standards for knowledge markets
. social goals of improving human skills and education
The GKEC will explore intra-firm, inter-firm, and overall industry plans,
policies, and metrics to measure and increase rates of innovation, the
efficiency of knowledge markets and the quality of knowledge at all
levels. GKEC-published reports and papers will increase the body of
knowledge and help organizations understand the management and allocation
of scarce knowledge commodity production resources.
Twice each year, in April and October, the GKEC will publish the Knowledge
Economy Report, assessing trends and projecting knowledge economics
developments.
Knowledge commodity production statistics, research information, reports,
and papers will be available through the GKEC Secretariat. Please contact
