Terje,

I agree with your comments about numbers used in organisations. My
problems have usually been concerned with getting enough data to establish
accuracy and precision in the conclusions I draw. We could all probably
do with a good dose of statistical theory, including error analysis and
dealing with uncertainty. What disturbs me, is that many managers don't
realise that uncertainty = risk, and that risk needs to be managed or we
will have incidents causing loss. The reason many of these bozos are
managers in the first place is that they have a little more experience
than some others in the organisation. That doesn't excuse total reliance
on 'gut feeling', in my opinion.
