I agree much more than just task-appropriate, however I am of the opinion
that the truism of McLuhan is just part of the truth. The medium as the
context/environment of the message is just as important as the message
itself.

I believe it is also fair to say that the media also give important clues
to the social/cultural background which forms part the context/environment
of the medium.
