Mona seeks suggestions regarding the design of a new-hire orientation
program.
Here are some thoughts for you, Mona.
Most new-hire orientation programs are a mix of administration and
indoctrination. The practical issue facing a new-hire and the
employing organization is getting the new-hire up to speed in his or
her new job as efficiently and effectively as possible. The issues
associated with that task typically go unaddressed in most orientation
programs. How, for example, does a new-hire go about establishing
productive working relationships with his or her new boss, peers and
subordinates, if any? How does a new-hire go about learning his or her
responsibilities and accountabilities? The list goes on. Many years
ago, I convinced the old Ma Bell to adopt a new approach to new-hire
orientation based on providing new-hires (or newly-assigned or
newly-promoted) with a set of job aids for use in efficiently,
effectively and quickly getting up to speed in their new job,
assignment or position. I'd be happy to discuss that approach with
you.
