In the states, this topic of a course in management usually (now) titled
Strategic Management. The latest text provide excellent schemes for
assessing the situation, evaluating competition, and defining a strategy
for a given company. I suggest the two texts

Strategic Mangement by Thompson and Strickland 9th edition Richard D.
Irwin

Strategic Mangement by Shrivastava Southwestern Publishing

as two very well written and well annotated books that take on through the
development process. Both books are less than half textbook and the more
than half a collection of cases for student analysis.
