I have enjoyed the honesty surrounding the recent discussions regarding
the difficulty of having people who just want to do their jobs and the
inappropriatness of the concepts of the learning organization. In recent
work with "systems thinking" in various organizations, I have found that
those who say they just want to do their jobs are people who believe they
have no control over what's happening to them. I believe them to be
motivated, like everyone else, to find real meaning and control in their
work. I think one of the things that helps is helping them see and
believe that systems issues are causing them to experience this lack of
control - that it is not them. It has been my experience that starting
small with having them do some process redesign is very empowering and
causes a shift.
I don't know that I agree that the concepts of the learning organization
are inappropriate so much as they are over-whelming and can be helpful if
presented in small pieces that relate directly to their work.
