Replying to John Constantine --

IMO, your model of communication, i.e., communication is the
responsibility of the listener, is a highly linear, mechanical view of
communication. According to the symbolic interactionist perspective of
communication, communication is not so much the exchange of messages, but
the creation of shared meaning and understanding, even if not agreement.
Although it is true that an audience must be receptive to a speaker,
receptivity is insufficient. It doesn't even begin to address the issue
of rhetoric and how influence occurs...back to motivation? That and
symbols...
