you've made an interesting observation, Simon. Actually, one can either
have too much (over 40, for instance) or too little experience. The
person with too much experience doesn't fit the mental models of those
doing the hiring. The person with too little experience doesn't either.
One point, though, you overlooked--you spoke eloquently of technical
experience. My experience is that the person with little or no experience
lacks experience in interpersonal relationships--a skill for which formal
education rarely provides.
I use to train a lot of college graduates with no experience. They were
energetic, idealistic and ready to conquer the world. They just didn't
know how to interact appropriately (most of the time) and didn't know "the
ropes." Much of that experience is still needed, despite the changing
times.
