Instrument Name: Organizational Culture Inventory
Description (if available):The Organizational Culture Inventory (OCI)
measures an organization's culture in terms of "what is expected" of
members of an organization--or, more technically, the behavioral norms and
expectations associated with the more abstract aspects of culture such as
shared values and beliefs. As part of Human Synergistics' integrated
development system linking individual thinking (Life Styles Inventory),
group interaction (Group Styles Inventory) and organizational culture, the
OCI measures 12 distinct, but interrelated, types of cultural norms. Some
of the cultural norms measured by the OCI are positive and supportive of
constructive interpersonal relationships, effective problem solving, and
personal growth; others are dysfunctional and can lead to unnecessary
conflict, dissatisfaction, and symptoms of strain on the part of
organizational members. The OCI can be used to measure the ideal as well
as the current culture, thereby allowing gaps to be identified and action
plans to be developed that target closing critical discrepancies.

Comments: We surveyed one team with the OCI, and the results were
consistent with our subjective views and all evidence we had gathered over
time. If you accept that organizational culture is the key to change, the
OCI can be very valuable.

"I am looking for organizational diagnostic instruments that could be
used to assess an organization's capability to manage change."
