I am cross-posting this on the ODNet and Learning Org lists. I have been
on both lists for over a year, post very infrequently, but really
appreciate these groups' collected wisdom, which I would like to draw on
at this time.
I am posting a question for a friend (classmate) who recently moved home
to Indonesia after 2 years in the USA getting a MA degree. Her husband and
children stayed at home and were very supportive. She went home during
each vacation. Now she is back home for good and emails me that the
re-entry process is harder than she thought and do I know any articles or
books about re-entry of this type?
She worked full-time in HR before she came here and is now back at her old
company (a state-run Indonesian company) where her husband works also.
(She did not work while in the US except for an internship.) Her employer
allowed her to go for this degree but did not pay for it (she got several
scholarships on her own initiative) and they don't seem too excited about
her expanded experience. She is investigating other job opportunities, a
fairly radical move for a married woman in Indonesia who has a guaranteed
state/corporate job.
I have read a few articles about repatriating Americans who have been
working overseas but this is a little different. Any reading suggestions
or personal anecdotes, especially from people at home in Asian cultures?
I will forward them to her.
