"...we need to realize that the school institution 'schools' very well,
though it does not 'educate'; that's inherent in the design of the thing.
It's not the fault of bad teachers or too little money spent. It's just
impossible for education and school ever to be the same thing." (26)

>From "Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling," by
John Taylor Gatto (posted November 4, 1997) --

Gatto taught in New York City for 26 years. He was named city and state
teacher of the year, and then resigned to travel the country calling for a
revolution in education.

For my own amusement and growth, I often prepare excerpts from books on
learning and leadership. If you are interested in reading more of "Dumbing
Us Down", or works by Tom Peters, Peter Drucker, Phil Schlechty, Michael
Fullan and others, send e-mail to s ott@nkcsd.k12.mo.us, and I'll let you
know how to access them. This is, of course, a free service in the
interest of learning.

Grace & Peace,
Scott Ott
