Jane,
Human Synergistics publishes a tool called the Organizational Culture
Inventory. We experimented with that with an IT group in London. The
consensus was that the Inventory identified the correct problems, helped
teams lead themselves to better places and generally was a good thing.
Unfortunately, before we could institute a change effort, a new CIO came
on board. He rejected all of our learning and quality programs and has,
in the past six months, dismantled every single program we started. IMHO,
however, the OCI is a very good tool for IT / IS settings. It is based on
a large database of companies and is very quantitative, so it appeals to
the quant that resides in most IT staff.
