The Seventh Annual University of North Texas Symposium:
Individual, Team, and Organizational Effectiveness

May 26-28, 1999 Denton, Texas

The Center for the Study of Work Teams will hold its seventh annual
conference on the campus of the University of North Texas. Papers are
invited that focus on all aspects of organizational psychology and
organizational science. Three tracks are described below that invite
papers on individuals at work, collaborative processes and structures, and
the design and development of organizations. Both empirical studies and
conceptual/theoretical papers are invited (excellent literature reviews
may fit the latter category).

Conceptual/theoretical papers will be shared in presentations; empirical
studies will be shared in poster sessions. The presentation forums may
include paper presentations, panels, round tables, and debates.

Track I: The Individual at Work

Papers submitted for this track will focus on the effectiveness of the
individual, including: performance management issues, work stress,
concentration, learning, motivation, leadership/stewardship, conflict,
socialization, control, job design, cognition, decision making, diversity,
measurement, reward, responsibility / accountability/ownership, appraisal
& feedback, emotion, values, creativity/innovation,
participation/involvement, the meaning of work, etc. (Conceptual papers
for presentations and empirical submissions for posters)

Track II: Collaborative Processes and Structures

Papers submitted for this track will focus on work group and work team
effectiveness including: team design and development, group process,
social networks, communities of practice, learning communities, emergence
and self-organizing systems, collaborative structures, lateral
integration, strategic alliances, informal networks, formal networks, webs
of participation, etc. (Empirical papers for posters)

Advanced Teams. Each year a special theme is chosen for a
portion of the collaboration track. The 1999 theme is advanced teams.
By advanced teams, we are referring to teams that have reached a fairly
high level of maturity. In developmental stages, the team has
reached an advanced or high performing stage. There are a number of
theoretical and practice issues when that occurs, including: the
debate between stage and process theories of development,
contingencies for high performance at that stage, growth beyond that
stage (e.g., self-governing, self-organizing), the interface problems
for an advanced team in a less advanced business environment (e.g.,
conflict with hierarchical approaches, managers' with limited
knowledge and skill, fear of high levels of empowerment, etc.),
training and development needs for advanced teams, self-management
challenges, selection/turnover problems, etc. Papers selected for
this track will be considered for publication in Volume 7 of our
annual series with JAI Press: Interdisciplinary Advanced in the Study
of Work Teams. (Conceptual papers for presentations)

Track III: Design and Development of Organizations

Papers submitted for this track will focus on organizational
effectiveness, including: OD, redesign, STS, incremental change, the
radical change that represents organizational transformation, horizontal
and vertical integration, alignment of systems, boundary issues,
cross-functional structure, new organizational forms (e.g., networks,
cellular organization, federations, alliances, etc.), evolution and
adaptation of organizations, complex adaptive systems, the learning
organization, organizational culture, strategic HR,
entrepreneurship/intrapreneurship, cross-cultural organization, transfer
of social technologies, sustainability, changes in research paradigms,
etc. (Conceptual papers for presentations and empirical submissions for
posters)
