Brock, having done some of this, my experience is that normally the
encoding system should be keyed or developed based on the variables you
are interested in...obviously there are systems out there for thing like
recording different forms of interaction within groups, etc.
Regardless, the next step is to figure out some way of validating whatever
measures you are using.
