Building Tomorrow's Company: the Inclusive Approach
Monday, 28 September 13.30 for 14.00 Start. Finish at 17.00
Royal Mail London Conference Centre Phoenix Place, Mount Pleasant, London EC1A 1BB
A joint meeting with the Centre for Tomorrow's Company and the UK Organisational Development Network
Following a three-year inquiry into business competitiveness sponsored by the UK's influential Royal Society of Arts, the 1995 Tomorrow's Company report recommended that business leaders adopt an `inclusive approach', taking a longer-term view of the interests not only of shareholders, but also customers, employees, suppliers and the wider community. The Centre for Tomorrow's Company was founded in 1996 - since when we have seen a shift in the opinions of business leaders towards an inclusive approach, a renewed interest in partnership in the workplace and Shell, one of the world's largest companies, knocked by public mistrust, adopting a triple bottom-line measurement (profit + social + environmental impact).
If you buy the idea that creating the conditions for people to be fully present (freely offering their best energy, enthusiasm and commitment) helps boost collective intelligence and thus organisational performance, then inclusiveness seems to make sense.
But how do you measure inclusiveness? What difference does being included make to a person, their feelings and their ability to contribute? How do you know when you're succeeding at being inclusive? In the real world, aren't there some times when it is necessary or beneficial to be somewhat exclusive? What limits do you set on inclusiveness? What levels of inclusiveness are appropriate in different settings?
Using three short interactive exercises, Tony Page will offer you the opportunity to explore these and other relevant questions on the theme of `inclusiveness and business success'. These exercises cover:
1. How inclusive is your organisation? - mapping exercise
2. Including your values - personal/pairs inquiry
3. Targeting and measuring inclusiveness in a single relationship.
Each exercise will be followed by a brief discussion about the opportunities for, and limits of, inclusiveness.
Tony Page is a facilitator and business psychologist. He is married with two children. In 1996 Gower published his book Diary of a Change Agent, an example of how he uses a diary method to help him work authentically and learn continually. The paperback was released this year. Tony, until 1988 with PA Consulting Group, has worked for the last decade as an independent consultant mainly in pharmaceuticals, financial services, hotels and in the public sector. He aims to help people in business to perform, grow, learn, change and develop. Currently he spends about 30% of his time working with the Centre for Tomorrow's Company.
