There's been some very rich conversation on this thread. Thought I'd toss
in this thought to complement most of what's been said.

Most of you are familiar with Argyris' "ladder of influence" (someone
already mentioned using this before). I suggest to folks that "suspending
judgment" means "don't leap over the ladder." It doesn't mean that you
won't shoot up the ladder. If I can stop before "action" kicks in, then I
have the opportunity to examine all of the steps that took me to the last
rung. Usually, I have the chance to modify much of what I thought--and to
get off the ladder. I'd much prefer to respond from level ground
(grounded in inquiry, advocacy and deep understanding) than from a rickety
old ladder!
