I do not think that the problems that you raise are peculiar to this list.
They have a great deal to do with the medium in my opinion. If one can see
another's eyes, watch their hands gesture, coax a smile from them or have
one elicited yourself, then I think you have an easier pathway to the
soul. I do not know the answer to this dilemma. I am trying to build a
cooperative knowledge base around issues of online facilitation with
colleagues at Knowledge Ecology Network and this is an issue that arises
again. We are searching for instances of online communication that folks
considered successes or failures. For some, obviously, the LO experience
is a success. I wonder what makes the difference. I also am curious if
computer mediated communication that produces what you desire exists.
(Perhaps in the judgment of some it exists right on this list.) When
questions such as yours are asked I have this sense that for m at least
'soul' is more likely to emerge. So I thank you for raising it here.
