Specificlly I work for an organization that is doubling in size each year.
We have managed the change well, by creating a team-based structure. Teams
are formed to serve the needs of our clients, from beginning to end. The
teammembers operate as if they are running their own small business.
Management oversees the teams, but pushes decisions to the team level as
much as possible. There is current discussion about the need to apply a
more formal strucuture across the organization to manage our growth. The
current wisdom seems to be that in order to grow to a large size we need a
more formal structure. I personally believe that the structure should be
developed by the individual teams to suit their specific needs and that,
while best practices need to be share across teams and the organization,
our team-based approach is what will let us grow without adding layers of
bureacracy.
If anybody has information that would prove or disprove my theory, I would
love to see it.
Thank you.
