Bruce then describes, in the deleted portion of this note, his
concentric model. And his presentation of the model provided a petite
epiphany which went back to my original question regarding the KM/LO
interface- which, incidentally, hooks nicely into the current models of
education

As an example, only, let us postulate that Bruce is a creative thinker
who has developed some very good ideas and made them avaiable to others.
How does he do it? That is the question, because those in the KM arena
would like to capture that skill and reduce it to a methodology. This
"methodology" can be defined as "intellectual capital" and I can now use
that method to generate wealth by practcing it myself or by teaching
others how to use the method. Bruce adds value to the world by using his
method to generate papers or widgets and his method has been cloned so
that, should Bruce disappear, his products are no longer here, but his
method for producing products is propagated throughout the organization.
Probably we reduce it to a book and sell the book or create workshops
teaching the method, or form a Bruce Methdology Association and license
the knowledge or form a consulting practice which is identified with the
Bruce Methdology.

Interestingly, if Bruce's methodology is substantive, others will add to
it and create a body of knowledge, reducing Bruce's value except as he
is able to either expand his own methodology, use his methodology to
propagate more products or he becomes an icon which evokes some
reverence when his name is pronounced

In any case the original knowledge has been seprated from the creator,
packaged and made avaiable as intellectual capital and, in many ways
dehumanized. Bruce is like the goose that lays the golden egg. As soon
as the egg is produced it has value and Bruce has value as long as he
lays eggs that can be packaged

It seems that KM/ICM may be the old organizational model in new clothes
and may represent a real challenge to the LO model

thoughts?
