As Alfie Kohn says, "Pay your people fairly, pay them well, and then do
everything you can to take their minds off money."

It's similar in Madison, Wisconsin (remember Madison? the city Money
magazine rated #1 in the country a few years ago?). The median price of a
house (new or used) around here is about $130,000. No wonder teachers are
concerned about pay - without two incomes it's impossible to live among
one's students.
