Dear Robin,
Thank you for clarifying the differences. That was very, very helpful.
We don't have CLOs and CKOs, per se, in higher ed, though one could argue
that chief executive and instructional officers share some of the same
characteristics. One thing this discussion made me think of was a college
in my region whose new president decided to "re-engineer" the college on
the philosophy that if it isn't broken, break it. As part of his
reorganization, he established the position of "Dean of Vision and
Quality." He actually found someone to fill that position but she bailed
just before he was fired. Not that I quarrel with vision and quality --
but my point is that when one person is designated as in charge of
learning -- or knowledge -- or vision -- or quality --- the reaction from
everyone else is often, "Great. That's his/her job; not mine. S/He is
responsible for learning/quality/etc., not me." Naming things...it is
humbling how much impact that can have. Anyway, my 2 cents. Harriett.
