Just a quick footnote to Brian Gordon's notion that "continuous learning
is expected."
I believe it was the great violinist Isaac Stern who said: "If I don't
practice for one day, I know it. If I don't practice for two days, my
colleagues know it. If I don't practice for three days, everybody knows
it."
Or, as Larry Wilson used to say, "If you stop getting better you stop
being good."
Certain of the professions understand this. They require continuing
learning in order to maintain one's "certification" to practice the
profession. (This is one of the big advantages of certification, in my
opinion.)
