Dear At,
In reading your story about Corine and hope, I am reminded of the strange
irony surrounding the fact that Stalin's daughter was, I think, named
"Hope." In this closing century, there was never a human being who came
close in scale of hatred of other human beings as that man, Iosip
Djugashvili. But from out of the next generation there came people with
that human trait of desperate belief in Truth.
Nadezhda Mandelshtam is another such "Hope," she whose husband died in the
gulag.
And how, in his excruciating simplicity, does Rumi capture this rapture of
Faith-in-this-moment! Read:
We are the mirror as well as the face in it.
We are tasting the taste this minute
of eternity. We are pain
and what cures pain, both. we are
the sweet cold water and the jar that pours.
Warm regards,
Barry
