I have a little problem with this concept of ' "score" of value to
society' being measured in monetary terms. How do you value voluntary
work within the community?

For a number of years, I chaired the management committee of the local
village hall (community centre). As the building is owned by the
community, my argument was that the committee should budget as though it
had to pay rent and use the operating surplus to maintain and enhance the
facilities, [to] ensure a sustainable future. I extended the operating
surplus to include building a reserve of 6 months income to protect
against unexpected events. My motivation was not profit but
sustainability. This was voluntary work, so on a monetary scale, it would
have been measured as of no value to the community.
