Replying to LO23598 --

In looking at Webster's definitions of cynic and cynical, there is clearly
a negative connotation attached to these words, a contemptuous
distrustfulness of human nature and motives, even captious. But I still
think the attitude has a place in the learning process because it raises
questions and responding to questions is how many of us begin to feel our
way along the path to new understanding. Granted, it can be a little
tiresome if a person is consistently cynical and therefore, so predictable
as to become irrelevant. Even so, I far and away prefer to have the
cynicism out in the open. It's not always a bad starting point, is it?
