Deborah Tannen will give a keynote talk at the Pegasus conference.
I just noticed she has a new book, _The Argument Culture: Moving from
Debate to Dialogue_, Random House, March 1998.
The book jacket: Tannen writes how we must believe that the best way to
a common goal is by thrashing out all our differences as loudly as
possible; we do it so much. Our public (and private) forums are
confrontational, all based on a war metaphor. Loud debate works against
increased understanding.
One chapter seems to suggest that new technology enhances aggression in
communications.
She argues that it's time for a different approach, that there are hints
in other cultures.
