A great example of job rotation combined with pay for skills acquired and
used is Milwaukee Electric Tool. You can read about them in Target the
AME publication.
Everyone is required to know and use several skills. They are trained by
coworkers and approved by coworkers along with managers. They are not
allowed to acquire skills and not use them nor can they acquire skills not
required.
The system is maintained by the workers.
Milwaukee Electric Tool has a sustained productivity record of 1 1/4% per
month for 10 years. It is a great place to work with very low turnover and
good safety records.
Are there any down / negative sides to it? I do not know of any, when you
pay attention to people needs and make the rules clear. There are many
ways to foul up anything of course.
