I think this is not exactly what you were asking, but maybe it can help
you and give you some ideas. There is a group of teachers (I think) that
decided to try lateral maps (graphical objects) as a way to facilitate
sharing and communication. I don't recall exactly what it was all about,
but I think they had build an application that enabled students to create
and edit lateral maps on-line. These were used as a translator of their
thoughts and ideas.
