Have you ever heard of Hans Magnus Enzensberger? He is an essayist,
lyricist, poet, novelist... he is NOT a mathematicist. (I was surprised to
see much of his work translated in english - click on amazon makes it easy
to find out today.)
He wrote also a beautiful book on mathematics for kids (lets say age 10 to
12). But also worthwhile reading for adults: A boy suffering from
school-mathematics on days and nightmares on nights, gets visited one
night by a 'number devil' and the adventure starts.
The Number Devil : A Mathematical Adventure -- Hans
Magnus Enzensberger, et al; Paperback
(et al. means that he gave the manuskript to a mathematician for
checking.)
