Replying to LO26295 --
There is a great deal of evidence that team nor individual incentives work
to improve the performance of the individuals or the organization.
That is not to say that incentives do not cause behavior, they do. It is
just that they cause behavior that management did not intend. It is far
better to avoid any manipulative incentive. MAN does not know enough about
MAN'S behavior to know how to do manipulate other people's behavior.
Read Alfie Kohn or any of the pre 1960 work on piece work incentives. Or
Deming or Peter Scholtes.
They are still in wide use but I have not seen a situation where they
actually were better than good management just trying to lead the troops to
improve.
I always recommend sharing the spoils of victory but not team or
department or individual incentives. They are manipulative and tend to
back fire in ways the management dose not often see.
