Rick,
You asked for some references on conflict and leadership--there
are many but on my bookshelves:
Blake, Robert R. and Mouton, Jane S., Solving Costly
Organizational Conflicts, Jossey-Bass, San Francisco, 1990 (and mostly
anything else they wrote because they researched that you could not
transform anything without candor and openness, dialogue, advocacy and
inquiry to explore conflict to resolution).
Argyris, C & Schon, D., Theory in Practice, Increasing
Professional Effectiveness, Jossey-Bass, San Francisco, 1974 and Argyris'
other works (_Reasoning, Learning, and Action_ and his newest one, _Flawed
Advice and the Management Trap_).
I'd also suggest that you take a look at Weisbord's _Discovering Common
Ground_ for examples of leadership using a particular strategy to lead
through conflict-laden situations. . . Also, Peter Vaill (_Managing as a
Performing Art_). James O'Toole: _Leading Change_.
