I came across a nice story in A. C. Graham's " Two Chinese Philosophers:
Ch'eng Ming-tao and Ch'eng Yi-ch'uan", (1958/1992),
' One day when Ming-tao was in Shan-chou they were repairing a bridge, and
search far and wide among the people for a long beam which was needed.
Afterwards, whenever on the way to or from the town he noticed a fine tree
in the forest, he found himself estimating its size. So he told his
students about it, as a warning that no matter should be retained in the
mind.'
I like Erwin Panofsky's Sugar story very much and I hope someone in the
list might like to share with us.

'If three of us walking together, there will surely be a teacher for me.' a
Chinese saying quoted in H. A. Simon's Models of Thought, Vol. II, 1989.
