I suggest the following definition:

"A system is a set of interdependent components that work together to
accomplish the aim of the system, by controlling the way inputs are
converted to outputs. The efficiency of the system can be evaluated by
measuring the ratio of output (product) to input (monetary value or energy
and materials) over a given time".
