Hello L.O. folks!
I have been "lurking" here for many months and would like to start a new
thread for those whom are interested.
At my company we have a somewhat novel definition of knowledge and
information.
Assertion: Information gives you the "facts" - knowledge tells you what to
DO about the facts.
As an example our manufacturing intelligence products show everyone in a
plant the real time product and part flows throughout the plant in real
time. Computer screens with moving, color-coded graphical icons show
products and parts as they move through each process allowing everyone to
instantly visualize the "state of the plant" as it changes.
As much technology as all this takes, it is merely INFORMATION.
A real-time artificial intelligence engine continuously "observes" these
flows (FACTS) and makes recommendations to people (and commands to
machines) about what to DO about impending disruptions, mis-sequencing,
gaps in production, etc.
This part is KNOWLEDGE although it is being executed within a computer.
Of course far and away the MOST knowledge resides within the people. We
just program small bits of their knowledge which are needed often or
needed by others.
Is this distinction valuable to anyone but me? Is there interest in what
I'll call a repository for EXECUTEABLE knowledge?
Best regards,
Hal Popplewell
