Cliff, what a wonderful summary of the post-capitalist dream. I believe
that the "wild card" that influences all natural (and free enterprise)
systems in our world is exploitation. I know that you mentioned this
factor, peripherally, in your posting. Exploitation of natural resources,
labor, capital, good will, native peoples, all living creatures--this is
the spectre our species will live (or die) with. Capital (in the latin,
capitalis) means wealth and symbolizes control, power, and advantage.
When we work cooperatively to generate wealth, and realize the fruits of
our labors without damaging our eco-system, we're engaging in a new kind
of enterprise. An enterprise that seeks to optimize, as you said, not to
maximize--not to exploit. I can't wait!
