Several weeks ago I volunteered to facilitate a discussion of the book
*Punished by Rewards: The Trouble with Gold Stars, Incentive Plans, A's,
Praise, and Other Bribes* by Alfie Kohn. With the help of some of my LO
friends I have compiled a very brief set of guidelines for our discussion:
We will formally begin our discussion in a week or so with my posting of a
few questions to get us started. My plan was to follow Kohn's outline of
the material and discuss the book chapter-by-chapter. However, Donald
Kerr has suggested that it would be helpful to precede Chapter 1 with a
discussion of Appendix B. So let's begin here; please use the subject
line: Punished by Rewards - Appendix B.
I will introduce Chapter 1 and successive chapters as new threads even
when threads are still going on from previous chapters and label each new
thread: Punished by Rewards - Chapt ___. If you have process suggestions
either before, during or after the discussion, please send them directly
to me, rather than posting them to the list, and I will incorporate and/or
summarize them for future discussions.
Let's also learn from the guidelines that Sherri Malouf developed for our
earlier dialogue experiment:
-speak from the heart, from the gut, more so than from the head
-speak to the center, rather than to any one person
-speak when moved and when ready
-pause...allow others words to land before speaking
-brevity...but not at the expense of spontaneity.
I'm excited about the opportunity for us to explore this topic that has
such powerful implications for our organizations and our lives.
Best regards,
Roxanne Abbas
