One thing I've noticed some families do is to use the summer to make up
for deficiencies in the other 9 months. Sometimes it's music camp, to get
a more intense focus on this (or one of the other) arts. Sometimes it's
an advanced educational experience in some form. Sometimes it's a
religious camp of some sort. Sometimes it's getting work experience or
money.
Certainly not all families do this or are able to do this. Certainly
there is room for improvement in our school systems. However, when/if we
move towards year round schooling, if we don't inject some added
flexibility into the system, we may end up hurting some who do take
advantage of their summers in ways such as these.
Oh yes, some of the things I mentioned could be covered by an "improved"
school system, but some arguably don't belong there or would take a long
time to create
