I worked with a wise Police Captain who helped me through a decision to
terminate someone who worked directly for me. He said, "you can teach
skills, but you can't teach heart." I think you do have to go with your
gut. As long as the bare minimum of sk ills are there you can ask a lot
of questions designed to find out how a person feels about learning, if
they take responsibility for their actions and how they handle conflict,
particularly by asking them to authenticate their answers with examples.
Eve ry hiring decisions I've made that was based more on skills and less
on heart has not be a good decision.
