Consider this: We've been following Eastman Chemical for the past four
years as they've evolved their team compensation system. First huge act
was to throw out team rewards altogether. Briefly, they said it was too
difficult to draw lines around the team. The possibly apochryphal story in
this regard comes from Hewlett-Packard where it is fabled that a manager
sent out an e-mail, inviting team members to come to a dinner to celebrate
their good work, anticipating replies from about 50. Instead 1500
responses came back from people who felt *they* were part of the team.

About two years ago, Eastman moved to rewarding what it calls the "big
team," i.e. the whole company. Everyone gets annual bonuses depending on
company performance. We report on this in detail in VIRTUAL TEAMS (Wiley,
1997).
