Gordon,
I too (like many others I suspect) have been in the situation of "Perform
to this Goal or Get Out." Though not in the same context. The relevancy
here is not whether this is good or bad/right or wrong, but rather what is
learned from the situation. Which behaviors do we wish to see continue and
what patterns can we anticipate? I have seen an individual ousted from a
team for over-achieving, and others removed just because they were a
random scapegoat. Since a lot of research has been performed on group
dynamics, behaviors and such, one would think we'd all know what to expect
from any given group/team situation. And probably, if we think about what
we're doing, we can make a pretty good guess about the consequences of our
actions. This thread has, for me, highlighted new aspects and
possibilities of teamwork and consequences (+/-) of performance
evaluation. Many thanks to all contributors.
One of my favorite dictums from Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt: "Tell me how
you'll measure me, and I'll tell you how I'll behave."
Regards,
