People bitch and moan when they can not act to take care of the problem
that bugs them . That is when they have no sense of control over their
immediate environment. At least it feels better than doing nothing.
Another reaction to being in a situation where one has no control, is to
become a cocoon. People will isolate them selves from their surroundings
in a variety of ways. Other people will find release in bitching. The
surveys at Novell were useless because people knew they were not going to
be used. The managers did not take them seriously nor understand them or
maybe even saw them as a way to get "me".
There are many companies where you can find fulfillment. I have seen bad
companies but none a blatantly bad as you describe. Even in situations
that were batter than yours improvements of 300% in productivity were
possible. I wonder what it could be at Novell. I would live to find out.
