This is in response to ALL the postings on Measuring the Value of IT.
I want to thank everyone who responded to my question. Your perspectives
both confirmed some of the difficulties we've been having in thinking
about it, and offered new insights and references to other resources on
this.
Clearly, this is a very complex issue because of all the assumptions and
intangibles that go into the assessment of "value" and the ability to
develop the software and change the processes in order to deliver that
value. Also, this is an assessment of FUTURE value fraught with
uncertainty. Seems a tough problem to crack with any rigor. Maybe rigor
can't be obtained so we need to invent some process by which there still
can be some intelligent prioritization. I am still struggling with it in
my own mind.
I am in the process of synthesizing the thoughts from this list and am in
the midst of dialogue with my client so don't have anything wise to offer
yet, but I will post something shortly with our conclusions....which still
might not be wise!
We've identified the obvious issues; now we need to get to the practical!
Thanks again for everyone's help and if there are more thoughts, don't
hesitate to send them along. I knew I'd get some great help by asking
this list!
Warm regards,
Margaret McIntyre
