Academic research seems to be based on that premise. The success or new
insights of one "team" or individual when published in the academic
literature, get used and incorporated in the "community of research
practice", to produce the next incremental or significant research gain.
The "win" of one team depends of previous cumulative wins of other
predecessor teams.

This shared competition is different from the win-loose mindset in most
sports. Even seemingly unfruitful research or "losses" increases our
knowledge base of where not to go.
