Dear Organlearners
Thankyou to all who have responded to my mail, both on and off the list.
Having had time to reflect on the meetings outcome, postings from the list
and talking to some participants at the meeting a number of learnings have
occured to me.
1. Be clear on your bosses outcome and objectives- My boss was in fact
pleased with the meeting as it seemed she valued the team building,
commitment aspect of the meeting more than the hard business facts review.
2. Choose format of meeting(s) carefully and their scope- I may have been
trying to raise too many issues too quickly. (The Agenda I pre-issued was
long and quite detailed). I will need to raise the questions in different
probably smaller groups, who have ability to take action, and will value
the time to think widely about that specific area, ie they have a vested
interest in attending to and exploring the issue. The meeting I ran was
probably too big and diverse to get into the detail I believe was needed.
3. Let the Audience create the questions they fell need asking- I may have
been too prescriptive with what questions needed asking, after all they
were my questions (Agenda) that I was selling to them. I could have had a
section to allow them to identify the kinds of questions they felt were
important.
4.The group is open to new ways of working. We did introduce some
interesting Projective Techniques in the session which worked well and
created humour and fun into the session. This was encouraging as the kind
of session we
5. There is a need to build flexibility into such "visioning" sessions.
This will develop through experience and eliciting feedback from audience
as to how they feel the process is going. Pre-planning alternatives would
be helpful and building confidence in my personal ability to cope with all
eventualities.
I am sure other learnings will emerge and I will try to keep list informed
of any future "insights" and "practical developments"!

Martin Silcock
