Replying to Ben Compton, LO17076
Ben, the way I read the paragraph you highlighted from the
Fieldbook is totally different from your reading.
First, I believe it illustrates that other cultures have
developed a different sense of the "I" vs. the "we" than ours.
Second, I have difficulty following your own logic when you
first say that you are abhorred by the implications of the paragraph -
that your existence is dependent on other people's existence. Yet, a
couple of paragraph below, you seem to imply that in order to achieve
your dreams, you need an organization, i.e. other people's existence.
I consider that the difference between me and a zombie is that I
have aspirations, desires and goals in life, and I have the freedom to
take steps to achieve those. That's what makes me a human being. That's
why I'd be a weak and helpless creature without others, because I would
not have the means to achieve my dreams and my aspirations, I would have
no means to "be"...
